The Importance of Errors and Omissions Insurance for Notaries Public

Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance is a form of liability insurance that protects professional advice- and service-providing individuals such as lawyers, accountants, architects, doctors, and notaries from bearing the full cost of defending against a negligence claim made by a client, and damages awarded in such a civil lawsuit.

Unintential mistakes and errors can not be prevented completely and therefore lawsuits are a serious concern for notaries public who work as small businesses and independent contractors. Live Scan Fees

Some of our clients have told us that they get some low quotes from other Live Scan companies. These companies probably only quote the Rolling Fee and not the fees for the DOJ and FBI.

The fees for Live Scan consist of the Rolling Fee for the fingerprinting and the background investigation fee. The background investigation fee depends on the level of service and is charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ). Additionally if your requesting agency asked for an FBI background check, an FBI fee will be due. These are paid for at the time of service as well.

For more information about our fees please go to Live Scan LA.

The National Notary Association Recommended Notary Practices

Notaries Public are Public Officials bound by the laws of their State and not by anyone else, including an employer, friend, associate or family member.

The National Notary Association has published a list of recommended notary practices:

  • Always follow state law that requires the signer to be in your physical presence every time you notarize without exception.
  • Always have the signature on the document affixed or acknowledged in your presence.
  • Always obtain identification that contains a photograph, physical description and signature.
  • Always keep a chronological record of the notarial act, including the signature of the signer in your journal, which must be kept in your custody and control at all times.
  • Always ask for a thumbprint of the signer in your journal to help protect against imposture.
  • Always confirm that the signer is not being coerced and is willingly signing the documents you notarize.
